Frac Pump Packing and Plungers: Identify Parts Before Ordering

Published by Pratt Oil ·

A request for frac pump packing needs more detail than the pump model and a photograph of several rings. Before asking for a quotation, identify the installed assembly, separate the required sealing components from surrounding hardware, and record what the proposed replacement set must include.

Identify the assembly before the individual ring

Start with the pump maker, complete model and any suffix shown on the nameplate. Add the installed fluid-end identification and the drawing or parts-list revision available in your equipment file. Mark where the requested packing is located. Keep the photographs, drawing and quotation request together so that each attachment can be connected to the same installed assembly.

Separate the plunger, packing and surrounding hardware

In the GD 3000 example, the plunger, coupling, packing nut, spacers, packing rings and seals appear as separate entries. That distinction helps a buyer explain what is required without treating everything near the plunger as one kit. Our pump plunger and plunger pump seal pages provide component references; matching still requires your equipment details.

Confirm what the packing set includes

A kit name alone does not describe its contents. GD's QSS parts guide, for example, lists different contents for its soft-packing and full-packing sets. This is an example for that named assembly, rather than a universal kit definition. Ask the supplier to identify every included item against your drawing. State separately whether you also need a gland, spacer, seal or other hardware.

Build a record the supplier can check

Prepare the following information before requesting a price:

  • Complete pump and fluid-end identification.
  • Exact part number, description and drawing revision.
  • Plunger diameter and other dimensions documented on the correct drawing.
  • Clear photographs of the component and any markings.
  • Required quantity, set contents and delivery destination.

If a field is unknown, mark it as unconfirmed. A photograph can clarify a request, but it cannot establish dimensions, material or fit by itself. For repeat purchases, include the previous order reference if available.

Send condition notes with the parts inquiry

GD identifies lubrication and plunger surface condition among factors affecting packing wear. Record relevant observations for your maintenance team and supplier, without using a photograph as a complete diagnosis. For replacement-part selection, send the identification record through our quotation contact page or explore fracturing pump parts. Request confirmation of the specific assembly before ordering.
