Mud Pump Piston Selection: Match the Liner and Rod

Published by Pratt Oil ·

To match a replacement mud pump piston, identify the installed liner bore, the piston assembly reference and its connection to the rod. Add the full pump nameplate and the applicable parts drawing. Together, these details provide a useful starting point for reviewing the requested replacement.

Identify the installed piston and liner

Record the pump manufacturer and full model marking, then locate the piston and liner in its parts documentation. Copy any suffixes and revision details exactly. NOV’s Type P booklet shows several liner sizes for its 12-P-160 configuration, illustrating why the installed liner size matters when identifying a piston.

State whether your request is for a complete piston assembly or a particular sealing component shown on the drawing. Include the current liner reference alongside the piston reference.

Check the rod and assembly interface

Provide the piston assembly number and the associated rod reference. If a drawing is available, mark the relevant connection and dimensions. A front-facing photograph can show the general component, while additional views help document its centre opening and attachment details.

GD Energy Products describes piston options for specified rod interfaces and pump applications. Treat those published details as manufacturer-specific examples; confirm the interface required by your own equipment documentation.

Include the operating conditions

Share the fluid type, documented operating temperature and other service requirements included in your maintenance records. Confirm any specified sealing material from the parts documentation.

NOV’s Mission guide identifies liner condition, alignment, backflush performance and service conditions as factors affecting piston performance. Include a brief account of observed wear or leakage for review. This information supports matching and discussion; it does not establish a failure cause by itself.

Prepare clear, separate order lines

Use one line for each requested component so that the quotation can distinguish the piston from related liner or sealing parts:

  • Piston assembly or component reference and quantity.
  • Installed liner reference and bore designation.
  • Associated rod reference and available drawing.
  • Required material or specification stated in your documentation.
  • Delivery destination and requested delivery date.

Where a number is missing, identify the component on the drawing and attach the available photographs or measurements.
